7A- Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1
Professional Meal Prepping
· Opportunity:
o Hundreds of people everyday desire to live a healthier lifestyle and improve their eating habits by eating healthier, but they usually encounter difficulties with time and expertise, especially when it comes to their diet.
§ The who: Citizens who wish for a healthier diet.
§ The what: They are unable to properly find the right diet.
§ The why: The don’t have time nor expertise to properly do the right diet.
· Testing the who: The who in this opportunity is very much broad since it applies to any person who wishes to have a healthier lifestyle. According to an article from the huffingtonpost.com, younger consumers are more concerned with their eating habit and leaning towards cleaner diet. They stated that 41% of Generation Z respondents would be willing to pay more for healthier products. (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/)
· Testing the what: Some people also believe that eating healthy has to be expensive and difficult. But does it have to be? Today there are much more affordable ways to eat healthy; however, it is still more expensive than a burger from McDonald’s.
· The why: The levels of obesity and heart related disease has never being this big before, and people are starting to be more concerned about this issue. Another aspect of this situation is the social media influence. People look up for the perfect lives and perfect models over social medias, and they are trying to look more like those famous people.
Here is an example of the questions that were asked to the participants:
1-Why do you think people are more concerned with what they eat nowadays?
2-Do you think people are willing to pay more to have a healthier diet?
3-Do you think people need efficient way to get healthier meals for a more affordable price?
4-Would you be willing to pay for a healthier weekly meal prep?
· Interview #1:
1. Social media has created an ideal image based on celebrities and models that people idolize and aspire to be. This has in turn made people more aware of how they look making them more concerned with health, fitness, and what they put into their bodies.
2. I think most people are willing to pay more for healthier food because it’s what’s expected, which is why people don’t eat healthy sometimes. So, if you’re willing to make the change you are also willing to pay more
3. Now a days society has become so fast paced, that having an option of more accessible and more affordable food would be great. So, yes there is a need for it
4. Yes, I would be willing
This is a student in the Dental school of the University Florida. From this interview I was able to reaffirm my theory, and that the opportunity is out there.
· Interview #2:
1- People care a lot because of societal standard, they want to be in shape to impress their peers or just society in general.
2- Yes, because people will do anything to look good, even surgeries. People are willing to spend as much as they can to show others their beauty.
3- Yes. Because people eat out a lot and it’s usually more expensive if it’s healthy.
4- Yes. Because it will save my time.
This lady had the same ideas and thoughts of the first one, generating the same type of results towards my research.
· Interview #3
1-Because people have realized that the food industry especially the fast food industry only cares about profit and could actually kill you.
2-Yes, I am sure that eating healthy despite of the “high” prices, it is still cheaper than hospital bills.
3- Not necessarily, I think people just need to educate themselves better.
4-No, I don’t see the need for myself.
This other student had different ideas, however, she still indirectly confirmed the need the market, especially on question #3.
· Interview #4
1- Because there is a trend for health and beauty.
2- Yes, people now pay tons of money just because it a package has organic on it
3- Yes, healthy food is still more expensive than junk food.
4- I don’t see why not; however, I don’t feel the need for me right now.
This participant does not think it would be for him, but still believes that there is a need.
· Interview #5
1- Yes, because people have become more aware of what goes into making their foods and how companies to make a profit have invested in harmful chemicals.
2- Not everyone, I think educated people are.
3- Yes, people need to be educated into that, I think if someone does that they would be very successful.
4- Yes, in fact, I need something of the kind.
This participant is actually looking for something of the kind, confirming the opportunity.
· Given your interviews, what do you know about the opportunity that you didn't know before?
From each participant I was able to gather something different and unique. I noticed that all of the interviewees were pretty honest and helpful. The interviewees actually helped me coming up with new ideas of how to market this opportunity. From an overall perspective I believe that they confirmed that there is a need in the market and that many people are willing to pay for this service. Not everyone was willing to pay for the service, but even those participants such as interviewee number #3 gave me great ideas and perspective. For example, when participant #3 mentioned that is better to pay more for food than hospital bills, I thought of that as a slogan or something of the type. Participant #4 say he would but that he did not see the need right at the time, which is also a great perspective because maybe in a future instance he would acquire the services. The interviews confirmed that my idea could become a successful service.

Hi Valtenius,
ReplyDeleteI agree with your interview findings that people are interested in the idea of eating and being healthy because of the social trends and pressures. As you have considered the “whys” in your opportunity, have you thought about the fact that “their heads” may be saying yes, but “their bodies” are saying no? Meaning, people may be saying they are interested in healthy eating habits, but the added expense or lack of expertise is not really the problem. At the end of the day, people may really just want to eat junk and are too afraid to say it.
Just a thought as you work toward your solution.
Cameron
Hey Valtenius,
ReplyDeleteI believe your observations are exact. People pay very close attention to what they eat now more than they ever did centuries ago. I also agree with you that this is due to the Social cultural forces that was made possible through the rise of technology, meaning how easy it is now to connect with the world and to be aspired by other people. This need exists, especially with the advancement of science we were able to realize that a lot of foods that we regularly consume will affect our health in the long run.
Very good observation!
Hey Valtenius,
ReplyDeleteIf i were one of your participants or interviewers I would of answered like this:
Here is an example of the questions that were asked to the participants:
1-Why do you think people are more concerned with what they eat nowadays?
-I am concerned for my health, in addition to the various diseases I might be exposed to by an unhealthy lifestyle. Over the past two three years I have battled with weight gain, anxiety, and depression. My heating habits were terrible because of my bartender lifestyle (at work till 3am then dinner and bed).
2-Do you think people are willing to pay more to have a healthier diet?
-Absolutely!
I say this kind of hesitantly... I think people will make trade offs for a healthier diet, they just don't understand where to start. A healthier lifestyle might cost more up front but can potentially be cheaper once someone has knowledge about nutrition.
3-Do you think people need efficient way to get healthier meals for a more affordable price?
Yes, I think this is offered already (Blue Apron) it's just not "affordable" for most house holds. This actually makes your job easier because the meal plans and the entrance to the market has been breached. You can use existing knowledge to help improve your product (Meal prep) to meet customer needs and concerns.
I think in this present market, there is an opportunity to educate people. With knowledge comes power and with that power allows companies to gain market share.
4-Would you be willing to pay for a healthier weekly meal prep?
I personally would not use meal prep as often as I should. I love having freshly prepared food and struggle with the idea of something being "prepped" six days ago. That last meal will always be awful and I just can't work myself up to that appetizing thought. Maybe there is a science opportunity in the market for this, making food stay fresh and good longer with out chemical modifications?
Over all, I think your Meal Plan idea Is perfect. I suffer from Laziness, lack of time, because of my busy lifestyle. I don't make dinner often and I find myself contemplating hiring a chef for that night and I remember takeout is a real thing... so, I do the unhealthy thing and get take out. I am sure this craving would be curved if I had a meal plan ready for dinner and I didn't have to spend so much time preparing and cleaning, only to end up eating my dinner half asleep in the bathtub or running out the door for work.
Great Stuff here! I am sorry if I had a lot of things to say, I am very passionate about this topic and I would love to know where it takes you. If you could keep me updated if you decide to actually pursue this (as a health guru I totally think you should), I would be very appreciated. If you've read my blog at all you might know that I am into healthy meals and healthy workout plans to promote and educate healthier lifestyles and reduce the potential for unhealthy diseases. I think we could run with this and make a killer company with your meal plans and my fitness knowledge and profession speaking skills.
